Railroad Spike Definition

Rail Track Spike TypesRail Screw Spike and Dog Spike

AGICO is manufacturing and supplying a wide range of rail screw spikes for railways. Railroad spike, also known as railway spike, track spikes, are designed with high precision and processed under mature technologies, which has been tested for decades.

AGICO choose high grade raw materials for rail spike production, in order to satisfying higher quality standards. With better reliability, robustness and effective performance, these products are used in large railway projects.

Dog Spike and Screw Spike

Dog spikes and screw spikes are two most common railroad spikes that AGICO manufactures,it is small part used to ensure the safety of railway fastening systems. Both spike functions by the equipped offset head, so as to work as a nail that secure and fasten rails on the rail sleeper.

Dog spike was first to be invented in 1832, its named for the two lugs on either side which looks like a dog head, it has similar dimensions to screw spike, with a flange with a radius dog spike can fix rail track straight to rail sleeper. While screw spike firstly showed up in 1860, and it became more popular than dog spike for its greater fixing power, even if the cost to manafacture screw spikes is higher than dog spike, the maintain cost of screw spike is lower. Generally speaking, Screw spike are mostly used in heavy rail applications, dog spike are used in light rail tracks.

Screw Spike Types:

Screw spike is also called sleeper screw, rail screw, through specific requirements such as length, diameter, drive head and thread profiles, the railway screw spikes can be classified into four types, including the Ss series sleeper screw, the square-head screw spike, the hexagon screw spike, and the double-head screw spike.

Dog Spike Used in Wooden Sleeper or Ties

The dog spike is used to fasten T-shaped rail road track to wooden ties, which has an L-shaped head and square shank, and the underside of whose head is sloped to fit the top surface of the rail base. Spikes with various sizes are provided to meet the different requirements of penetrating length of spikes. The common track spikes are the 5/8”*6” and the 9/16”*5-1/2” for smaller rail sections, and they are usually secured in either 200 lb. kegs or 50 lb. kegs.

Lock Spikes

AGICO Lock Spikes

The Tie Plate employ spring compression to hold tie plates firmly in place on cross ties and bridge timbers. They can be driven with standard track tools. Spikes are placed on the diagonally opposite hold-down holes of the tie plate and driven in prebored holes in the tie. Holes of 9/16 in. diameter are drilled to a depth of 7 in. below the top of the tie plate. Spikes are available in 6 in. or 7 in. lengths. Two lock spikes normally are used in conjunction with two standard cut spikes in each tie plate.
