  1. One-Shot Crucible: A high-temperature container used for the chemical reaction of welding flux and automatic pouring of molten steel during thermite welding of continuous welded rail (CWR) for various rail types.
  2. Luting Sand: A sealing material used together with thermite welding consumables, mixed from quartz sand and bentonite. It is used to fill and seal pre‑formed grooves in the sand mold and the gaps where the mold contacts the rail.
  3. Ignition Rod: A special fuse/wire used together with thermite welding materials to ignite the thermite welding flux.

  1. Preheater and Shelf: Used to preheat the weld joint area during thermite welding.
  2. Crucible Lid: Weight: 3.2 kg. Material: 2 mm cold-rolled steel plate. The crucible lid is placed over the crucible opening to shield against sparks and splashes generated by the flux reaction.
  3. Crucible Bracket: It secures the sand mold, supports the crucible, and aligns the crucible pouring spout with the sand mold sprue.

  1. Welding Sand Box Frame: Material: 2 mm cold-rolled steel plate. A special sand mold fixture/tool.
  2. Bow‑type clamp (C‑clamp): A special tool for clamping the sand mold, used to secure the sand mold during operation.
  3. Slag Pan: A special tool for thermite welding, cast steel, high‑temperature resistant and non‑stick to molten iron.
  4. Rail lifter and aligner: Two pieces form a set. It quickly aligns, levels, and corrects the two rail ends at the weld joint.

  1. Wedge Steel: It is used to adjust the height difference and alignment of rail joints before welding.

Thermit Rail Welding Process

A sand mold is a die used to fix and support rails during aluminothermic welding. In aluminothermic welding, prepared aluminothermic flux is placed in a special crucible, ignited with a high-temperature match, and the resulting molten steel is then poured into a preheated sand mold. The ends of the butt-jointed rails in the sand mold melt and fuse under the action of high-temperature molten steel, forming a welded joint upon cooling.
