Working Principle of Electric Rail Grinding Machine

Safety Precautions of Rail Grinding

Before rail grinding work, the operator must wear protective equipment such as safety glasses and gloves, and operate the rail grinder using both hands, firstly inspect the motor and wiring for leakage, then perform at least 2 no-load test runs in a safe area. If sparks approach flammable materials, protective measures must be taken immediately. The operator of rail grinding machine shall follow the list of operational guidelines.

  • The rail grinder is mainly used for post-welding grinding and rail profile restoration.
  • The operator can grind the rail head and side in one operation.
  • The rail grinder position can be adjusted from horizontal to vertical.
  • The grinding wheel axis must remain perpendicular to the rail axis.
  • The profiling rollers and hanging wheel must closely contact the rail contour to ensure accurate guidance and profile restoration.

How to Prevent Accidents

High-speed rotating grinding wheels usually cause accidents in rail grinding machine. So the operator has to regularly inspect the wheel and check for loose fastening nuts to ensure the safety guard is securely installed. Damaged grinding wheels must be replaced; the grinding wheels must rate above 4000 r/min; wait until the rail grinder is stopped before the replacement. After replacement, run the machine idle for 30 seconds. Keep personnel away during testing. And lastly, store grinding wheels in a dry environment.

  • Place the grinder onto the rail.
  • Move it along the rail using the two profiling rollers (6).
  • Ensure the hanging wheel (5) contacts both sides of the rail and rotates freely.
  • Rotate the handwheel (4) clockwise to lower the cup grinding wheel (7).

2. Grinding Process (2-Stage Method Recommended)

Rough Grinding and Finish Grinding

(A) Rough Grinding

  • Move the grinder along the rail while gradually lowering the wheel.
  • Grind until approximately 1 mm remains above the rail surface.
  • Start grinding from the rail head, then proceed to the rail side.
  • Reverse the machine to grind the opposite side.

(B) Finish Grinding

  • Reposition the grinder.
  • Lower the wheel until it just contacts the untreated rail surface near the weld.
  • Begin grinding from the rail head, then the side.
  • The grinding area should extend 100 mm on both sides of the weld.
  • Slightly lower the wheel to compensate for wheel wear.

When rail grinding is finished, rotate the handwheel counterclockwise to raise the grinding wheel. Prepare for the next weld grinding operation.
