NLQ-45 Rail Concrete Sleeper Bolt Drilling Machine

The NLQ-45 Rail Drilling Machine is suitable for drilling out concrete sleeper bolts of various types under track (line closure) conditions. Using the principle of a trepanation (core) drill, it can perform drilling operations at any position on a concrete sleeper to remove plastic dowels and rail bolts anchored in the sleeper. The concrete sleeper remains undamaged. After the bolt is removed, a new rail bolt can be re-anchored in the drilled hole of concrete sleeper.

During train operation, the rail bolts in concrete sleepers are subjected to bending, tension, and shear forces simultaneously. The main machine can work with the base or be used alone for drilling work. If it needs to be taken off the track during operation (e.g., for an approaching train), it can be lifted out together with the drill bit, and the base can be removed. The main machine needs to be placed in a safe location. After the train passes, the base is repositioned and adjusted properly on the rail, and the guide rod is reconnected with the guide sleeve to resume drilling. This advanced design improves work efficiency and reduces labor intensity, making it an ideal tool for track laying and maintenance.

How does NLQ-45 rail drilling machine work?

It is a special tool for quickly drilling out damaged nylon nuts inside concrete sleepers. An internal combustion engine powers this rail drilling machine. Here is its working principle: it uses a hollow drill bit connected directly or via a coupling shaft to the motor output shaft. The engine drives the hollow drill bit to rotate, thereby drilling out the damaged rail bolt or nylon nut from the concrete sleeper.

4 Operation Steps of the NLQ-45 Rail Drilling Machine

The operator shall inspect and tighten all bolts and threaded connections on the rail drilling machine to ensure they are securely fastened. Here are the 4 operation steps for NLQ-45 Rail Drilling Machine:

  • Fuel Mixture – Mix gasoline and special 2-stroke engine oil in a ratio of 30:1. (If using commercially purchased engine oil, mix at 25:1). Shake well to ensure uniform mixing.
  • Refueling – Pour the mixed fuel into the engine fuel tank.
  • Drill bit installation – Secure the coupling shaft to the drill bit. Then press the other end against the adjusting screw at the top of the drill spindle and rotate the drill bit in the opposite direction to tighten it firmly.
  • Start drilling – Start the drilling machine under no-load, then open the water supply valve. When water flows out of the drill bit, position the drilling machine on the drilling point, and apply light and even pressure. When the drill bit has penetrated about 5 mm into the material, increase thrust to perform normal drilling.

( If the engine speed becomes excessively high, it is overloaded; the operator shall immediately reduce the throttle to bring the speed back to the safe range. )

There are 2 tips to avoid overheating of the engine and drill bit: 

  • Engine Overheating: Do not block the motor ventilation slots during operation to prevent excessive engine temperature rise, which could affect service life.
  • Drill bit Over-heating: During drilling, ensure an adequate water supply enters the inner cavity of the drill bit for cooling, and nylon chips are flushed out, preventing damage to the drill bit and the sealing ring.

How to do the Maintenance Work

The NLQ-45 rail drilling machine is a portable type tool for concrete bolt drilling and extraction. The maintenance work is relatively simple, but if the NLQ-45 rail drilling machine malfunctions, take it to a professional repair service for inspection and repair. Do not disassemble or replace parts that don’t fit.

  • Engine Maintenance – Regularly start it unloaded to inspect the working state of the engine.
  • Periodic inspection – After use for a month, perform scheduled maintenance. This mainly covers checking all engine components for damage, insulation resistance, replacing lubricating oil, and replacing worn parts.
  • Sealing ring replacement – If water leakage is observed at the drill bit head, replace the rubber sealing ring immediately.
  • Clean and storage – Keep the drilling machine clean and dry, and remove the drill bit when not in use. Apply a layer of grease to the threaded connections on the machine spindle and the drill bit for protection.
