Here are the most comprehensive operation tips for safety during rail ballast tamping job:

  • Operation Training: The operator must be trained, familiar with the YD-22 rail tamping machine’s performance, and pass a test before operating on the track.
  • Engine Operation: The gasoline engine must be used strictly in accordance with its operating instructions. Check whether the lubricating oil level is within the scale marks on the dipstick. Do not adjust the rated speed arbitrarily. No flammable or explosive materials shall be placed near the gasoline engine. Do not refuel the fuel tank while the engine is running. After the engine has cooled down, use a refueling tool to add fuel, preventing fuel spillage. If spillage occurs, wait for the fuel to evaporate before restarting. Do not touch the muffler while the engine is running or before it has cooled down after stopping.
  • Operation on Rail Track: Place the trolley on the rail track, with the traveling wheels aligned with the two rails. Raise the lifting cylinders to the topmost position. Push the two rail tamping machines, in order from left to right as A and B (for a group of four machines, in the order AB, AB), onto the leveled trolley. During operation, the operator should preferably face the direction of oncoming trains.
  • Engine Start: The gasoline engine should be started by hand-pulling. After idling smoothly, increase the throttle to the working position, and perform tamping according to track conditions. After the pick is inserted into the ballast bed, clamp only 1–3 times.
  • Tamping Operation: The operator shall closely monitor the rail tamping machine’s operating status and track conditions. The two operators shall cooperate closely to ensure coordinated movements. During tamping, avoid obstacles such as anti-creepers, gauge rods, and supporting timbers.
  • Lubricating: Do not apply lubricating oil to moving parts of the tamping machine. The grease nipples on the vibration frame only need to be greased once every 50 working hours. Method: manually turn the eccentric iron, stopping every 90°–120° of rotation, and apply a small amount of composite aluminum-based grease (one press of the grease gun). Apply to 3–4 positions. Avoid over-greasing or frequent greasing, as this may cause bearing overheating.
  • Emergency Shut Down: If a malfunction occurs during operation, use the hand pump to quickly lift the picks and remove the machine from the track for troubleshooting. Do not stop the machine on the track to resolve faults.

Daily and Periodic Maintenance for Hydraulic Rail Tamping Machine

Maintenance Type Frequency Specific Tasks
Daily maintenance After each day's work
  1. Clean off dust and oil stains.
  2. Tighten all fasteners.
  3. Eliminate oil leaks.
  4. Check that the gasoline engine oil level is between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick.
Periodic maintenance Every 50 hours
  1. Inspect or replace pick plates, horizontal cylinder clevis sleeves, synchronizing rod sleeves, etc.
  2. Weld and repair pick claws to restore original design dimensions.
  3. Filter or replace hydraulic oil; clean hydraulic cylinders, oil tank, oil filter, and oil pipes.
  4. Replace failed fasteners.
  5. Readjust oil pressure to 5.0 ± 0.5 MPa.
  6. Eliminate oil leaks; replace defective seals.
  7. Inspect and replace rail clamps.
  8. Perform maintenance as specified in the gasoline engine instruction manual.
  9. Grease the vibration frame.
